Guidance and resource pack

For electrical contractors preparing for assessment as a Part P Competent Person

Working closely with ECA, and supported by the IET, BRE Certification has developed a Competent Person Scheme for Part P of the Building Regulations that has been approved by the Government (see www.communities.gov.uk).

This means that firms wanting to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations, can now apply to BRE Certification (visit www.partp.co.uk or ring 0870 609 6093) to become a Competent Person.

This document sets out the criteria against which firms seeking Competent Person status will be assessed and provides brief guidance notes to assist a firm when preparing for its assessment.

The aim of the document is to:

  • enable a firm to carry out a simple self-appraisal and thus identify and rectify any shortcomings prior to its assessment
  • minimise the number of minor non-compliances identified by an assessor, and thereby
  • ensure the assessment process is carried out efficiently and at minimum cost.
  1. This guidance makes reference to a number of documents that assessors will need to see as part of their assessment process. Firms are strongly advised to make sure that all the relevant documents are assembled and ready for the assessor prior to the visit.
  2. This guidance is based upon the BRE Certificiation's Scheme Document. Firms applying to become Competent Persons should refer to this document that may be obtained from www.partp.co.uk/.
  3. Firms that find the requirements too daunting might consider becoming an ECA Registered Associate. This is a scheme devised by the ECA to support and assist firms to meet ECA membership requirements and Part P Competent Person standards.
