Welcome to the Part P section of the ECA website

This area of the ECA site is designed for firms that carry out fixed electrical installation work in dwellings in England and Wales and want to be able to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations, in particular Part P (electrical safety).

About Part P

Part P was introduced on 1 January 2005 to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty installations and to make it harder for incompetent and rogue installers to leave electrical installations in an unsafe condition.

To be able to self-certify that your electrical installation work complies with Part P (and other applicable parts of the Building Regulations) and, thus, to avoid having to notify, or being subject to inspection by Building Control, your firm must be registered with an approved Part P Competent Person Scheme.

You may also wish to consider joining the ECA at the same time as becoming a Competent Person. Advantages of doing this are listed below.

The benefits

The following benefits apply if you opt to join the ECA at the same time as becoming a Competent Person.

  • As an applicant to the ECA, you will be assisted by ECA local staff who will give you advice and support in preparing you for your Part P assessment and membership application
  • An ECA Technical Assessor will undertake your assessment on behalf of BRE Certification (BREC)
  • Successfully completing a Part P assessment meets the ECA's technical membership standards
  • As an ECA member, you will benefit from free advice and support provided by the Association's professional staff covering commercial, legal, contractual, technical, health and safety, training and employment matters
  • As an ECA member, your customers will benefit from the ECA's free warranty and bond schemes that are fully compliant with Part P.
