Environmental issues and the ECA

Environmental issues are having an increasing effect on ECA members of all sizes. While many of these issues can pose practical problems, they also raise opportunities, too. For example, while it is getting harder to dispose of waste, there are plenty of ways for contractors to minimise operational waste and cut operating costs.

What does it all mean?

Most people will have heard of sustainability*. Some might say it has little to do with running an electrical contracting business, however, sustainability initiatives from government, clients and major contractors are already affecting our members.

Because of the nature of our business, we are particularly affected by measures linked to controlling climate change but there are also other issues, such as waste disposal. Examples of sustainability measures that affect ECA members are changes to Part L of the Building Regulations and tougher legal controls on disposing of waste and recycling electrical goods.

Sustainable solutions

Many ECA members are already being asked, when tendering for work, for details of their approach to environmental issues. Some of the larger member companies have responded by achieving certification to environmental management standards (notably ISO 14001). Some are taking a proactive approach to minimizing waste materials and energy throughout their projects.

The ECA is already well regarded for its approach to quality and safety and a responsible, professional and cost-effective approach to environmental performance will further add value for our members and our clients.

*For many companies, 'sustainability' can be described as the ability to operate successfully without harming the environment or society, either in the short or long term. Governments are keen persuade companies of all sizes, though taxes, incentives, changes to the law or other methods, to ensure they act in a more sustainable way.
