ECS Health and Safety Assessments
The ECA runs paper-based ECS Health and Safety Assessments at venues across the country as part of an initiative to promote general health and safety awareness within the industry.
Successful candidates will receive a Health & Safety Assessment Certificate from the JIB (or via their employer), which may be used when submitting an application to the JIB for an ECS card ('JIB card').
Passing an ECS Health and Safety Assessment is compulsory prior to submitting an application for an ECS card, unless the candidate holds a recognised health and safety qualification which exempts them. Full details of exemptions are listed on the booking form.
Card and Certificate Expiry
The Health & Safety Assessment Certificate is valid for two years, and an ECS card must be applied for within that time. Thereafter, the ECS card is valid for 3 years. A subsequent Health & Safety Assessment will need to be taken in order to renew the card at the end of this 3 year period.
About the assessment
- Candidates will sit a paper-based assessment consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions, randomly selected from a database of approximately 300
- This is a 'closed book' assessment and, as such, no revision materials will be allowed into the exam room
- The candidate is allowed a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the assessment
- The pass mark for the assessment is 85% i.e. 34 correct answers out of 40
For preparation and revision purposes, candidates will be sent a copy of the JIB's Specimen ECS Question and Answer Book, in which they will find examples of the questions that they may be asked in their assessment. An electronic version of the book can be downloaded from the JIB website www.jib.org.uk
Those requiring a Site Visitor Assessment will also receive a 40-question paper as described above - the sole difference being that a Site Visitor Assessment does NOT include any questions taken from the General Electrical Safety section of the book.
