ITEC Datacomms Project

At the end of 2001, the ECA reviewed its policy towards the IT sector.

With more than half of all ECA member companies (1000+) undertaking IT work, either as a main activity or to some minor extent, the ECA considered that the time had come and the IT sector needed to be improved in all areas to bring the same quality of professionalism as it achieves in its other sectors.

The ECA therefore launched its 'Datacomms Project' which, once completed, would define competency levels, job descriptions, NVQs, CGLIs, professional recognition, an ID card registration system identifying qualifications and Health and Safety training, a company quality system and also international company quality qualification recognition.

The project addressed all relevant structural cabling communication qualifications on the market up to and including Degree Level, and cross mapped them with a view to their academic achievement against those of an electrical operative.

The cross mapping exercise was designed for the part of the project which addressed the issue of employees who had already obtained relevant skills and knowledge, but did not necessarily have any formal qualifications.

Another main objective of the project was to deliver a recognised route which provides low-cost training, allowing employers to recruit school leavers and adult trainees without enduring the usual high cost of this process, and also enabling them to qualify for available government training grants.
