In late April we launched Power Players, the ECA’s new industry-wide initiative developed to find and promote exceptional talent within engineering and electrotechnical services.
Aimed at those up to 39 years of age, the initiative aims to capture the innovation and skill of individuals in the earlier stages of their careers. We’ve opened it to a wide range of professionals, working both on and offsite, from across the sector. There is an array of prizes on offer to those entering, including a trip to the USA worth thousands of pounds, and mentoring from business guru Sir John Parker.
The ECA are collaborating with a range of industry bodies to develop and promote this exciting initiative. Publishing and events group All Things Media – who are running this year’s Electrical Design & Install Expo – are an official partner of Power Players. Another partner is The Electrical Industries Charity, with CEO Tessa Ogle on the initiative’s judging panel. ‘Power Players is a very important initiative because it will provide recognition for young people who are already making a positive impact in the early part of their careers’, notes Ogle.
- Power Players also has the support of a variety of organisations, the full list of which can be found here [link to supporters’ page].
An entirely digital initiative
Mirroring wider society, our sector is moving further into the digital age and Power Players is designed to be an online only initiative. The entry process is entirely digital and simply requires the submission of a short video showcasing outstanding or impactful work. Entrants can record their video however they wish (professionally produced videos are not required!) and are welcome to include within this other forms of media (statistics, testimonials, infographics, graphs).
We want to hear from anyone whose work within the diverse engineering services sector demonstrates leadership, collaboration, innovation or creativity and has had a positive impact on the industry or society.
Judging and incentives
After the entry deadline, on Friday 23 June, a panel of industry experts [link to judging page] will shortlist the leading entries, with the final five then put to a public vote on social media – and the entire industry will be encouraged to vote for their favourite contender during August and early September.
The final five nominees will be showcased during the Electrical Design and Install Expo (ED&I Expo) which is being held at the NEC in Birmingham in September 2017 and is expected to attract around 5,000 visitors over two days. The top two will be declared winners on day two of the ED&I Expo (7 September). They will receive an array of prizes and opportunities, including:
- Trip to the USA worth thousands of pounds
Winners will visit the (USA) National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Conference 2018 in Philadelphia, PA from 29 September – 2 October. More information on the conference can be found here - http://necaconvention.org/
- Top quality lunch and mentoring with business guru Sir John Parker
Sir John is set to become chair of construction giant Laing O’Rourke and is former president of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2011 to 2014. He notes: ‘I am honoured to be invited to hopefully add some value to the winner of this important ECA award.’
- Apple iPad Mini 2 for the top two
- Develop a fundraising initiative with the Electrical Industries Charity in 2018
- Opportunity to participate in an ECA webinar in 2018
- Significant promotion by initiative partners and coverage within the media
