The Benefits Agency provides sick pay to Electrical Operatives for up to 26 weeks in a 52 week period and will be paid according to JIB grade - in the example of an approved grade this would equate to a maximum of £3,840 in any one year.
Key features of the scheme:
- There is a two week waiting period before Sick Pay is paid, during which time only SSP applies. This waiting period does not apply to a subsequent period of sickness which occurs within 13 weeks of the original. Entitlement ceases after 28 weeks.
- From Week three until week twenty eight the operative receives both JIB Sick Pay and SSP.
- JIB Sick pay varies according to the grade the Operative holds and increases as the length of absence progresses.
- Sick pay is not paid for days taken as holiday.

After the period of sickness benefit of 28 weeks, employees who are still unfit for work can opt for a total disability waiver. This allows, without additional premium, for a future claim for either permanent and total disability benefit or death benefit, provided disability occurs prior to age 65 and proof of disability is provided as required. Eligibility terminates at normal retirement age.
