Past Winners

Since winning the awards, our previous winners have gone from strength to strength in their careers and have continued to add value to their employers’ businesses and the industry as a whole.

Read more below on what our past winners have been up to since winning the title of Apprentice of the Year.

  • As ECA Edmundson Apprenticeship Ambassador 2016/17, I have had opportunities to share my passion for the industry, promoting apprenticeships around the UK.  Furthermore, it has been an honour to mentor several apprentices within Chris Bowker Ltd and I have taken great pride in sharing my knowledge with industry professionals of the future.

As the 2016 ECA Edmundson Award winner, Schneider Electric invited me in April to visit their research and development centre in Grenoble. This was an unforgettable trip that gave me an insight into some of the software and products that are set to revolutionise the way we manage our energy efficiently.

I now hope to play my part in ensuring that as many young people as possible know the potential benefits an apprenticeship has to offer, including a clear career path and a well paid job at the end.

  • Since winning the title of Apprentice of the Year I have furthered my educational experience and taken the following City & Guilds courses: 2394 – 2395 (initial verification, certification, periodic inspection & testing of electrical installations) & 2396 (Design, erection and verification).

I have since been made a contracts manager which consists of electrical design, estimating and tendering for various projects, meeting deadlines and budgets.

I have also gained the title of ‘Qualifying Supervisor’ through the NICEIC in demonstrating competency and understanding within initial verification, periodic inspection & testing of electrical installations which enables me to verify and sign electrical certificates.

I am part of a team which looks after numerous operatives within the company and currently project managing a major contract at British Steel as well as all the other little day to day projects.

  • Since being awarded the ECA Edmundson Award I have completed another 4 year apprenticeship studying Sustainable Building Services in the Built Environment. I then continued my studies with a degree in Business Management which I completed in December 2016. I am now employed as an Electrical Project Engineer with NG Bailey.

Following on from the awards ceremony, which was also attended by the directors of NG Bailey, I was recognised as being someone who is serious about their career and about progression within the industry. This led to working relationships that I hadn’t had before and opened opportunities for me to progress my career. It was a pivotal stage of my career and I am now in a very fortunate position where I am trusted by NGB to manage electrical packages which have a value in excess of £10m.

I have been involved in a range of projects since the awards – Houses of Parliament (M&E services survey), 5 & 6 St James’s Square (office new build & refurbishment), Heathrow T2A, Lewisham School, Trafalgar Place (flat development in Elephant & Castle), 33 King William Street (office block new build) and Southbank Place Shell Centre Development (basement infrastructure services).

  • Winning Apprentice of the Year definitely helped me to succeed in my career. Shortly after winning, I was made project manager of the company’s high voltage department. I gained experience in this field and then returned to the team I had started with as their project manager.

In February 2016, I was made District Contracts Manager and I am now responsible for a multi million pound business, 63 members of staff and 15 apprentices. I am essentially where my manager had been when he put me forward for the award!

I hugely support the work you’re doing and am now thinking about putting some of my own apprentices forward.
