JIB pay and holiday rules for Christmas and New Year 2017/18

Employees are entitled to three days bank holiday during the Christmas/New Year period, under Joint Industry Board (JIB) National Working Rule 12.

An employee who is required to work on these bank holidays is entitled to the following for each of the public holidays worked:

  • Christmas Day:  Double time pay, plus an alternative day of holiday for which the payment is the JIB hourly rate.
  • Boxing Day: Time and a half pay at the appropriate hourly rate, plus an alternative day of holiday for which the payment is the JIB hourly rate, OR, at the employer’s discretion, 2.5 times pay at the JIB hourly rate and no alternative day off.
  • New Years Day:   Time and a half pay at the appropriate hourly rate, plus an alternative day of holiday for which the payment is the JIB hourly rate, OR, at the employer’s discretion, 2.5 times the JIB hourly rate and no alternative day off.

Member organisations who wish to mirror the construction industry shutdown over Christmas and New Year, and are able to contractually, should note that the Construction Industry Joint Council shutdown period is from normal finishing time on Friday 22 December 2017 to the normal starting time on Monday 8 January 2018.
