Everyone has different ways that they prefer to learn. How to get the most from the ECA 17th edition on-line training

Treat the programme as a normal training course

  • One of the main featuresof this course format is that it is possible to stop and repeat sections to get a better understanding of the content where needed; likewise it is also possible to skip forward on sections.
  • The training programme does not cover every single regulation in BS7671 but covers broad topics and draws attention to important areas that should be noted. In all cases, the regulations should be referred to for full details of how an electrical installation should be installed to comply with the requirements of the regulations. Taking time to study the regulations will help understanding of how BS7671 applies in particular circumstances.

Devote time to study

The programme is designed to encourage study of BS7671. It is possible to rush through the video sessions quickly to get to the end, but this may not be a positive learning experience. In order to gain a better understanding of the wiring regulations, ensure you find time to follow and study each subject to its conclusion.

Break the programme up into manageable sections

There are times when delegates will find they need motivation to continue and complete the programme. Breaking the training into manageable sections will adi learning and help provide a sense of achievement with each piece of progress. It will also prevent information overload, ensuring delegates get the best out of the course.

Try the assessment questions

Trying the assessment questions will help participants prepare for the 17th edition assessment as well as reinforcing a candidate's study of the requirements of BS7671.

Get prepared for the assessment

Before going for the assessment, candidates should give themselves time to prepare; for example it will be an advantage during the exam if the candidate is familiar with where the tables are, what the appendices cover and when to use each section of BS7671.

During the assessment

  • Allow enough time for each question.
  • Read each question and answer carefully before selecting the answer.
  • Use the regulations as a reference when considering the answer, and do not rely on memory. The exam is based on the wiring regulations only, and not on assumed industry working practices.

The 17th edition assessment requires attendance at an examination centre

There will be a lead time between booking and sitting the exam.  Candidates will need to make sure that they have enough time to prepare for the exam prior to their exam date.  Do not rush preparation, and make sure to be ready in good time by studying the course material thoroughly, and carrying out some revision. This will give the best possible chance of being successful.

Booking the BS7671 exam

The 17th edition assessment must be booked separately as it is an attendance-based, inviligated formal examination. Please enquire via your local college or training provider before purchasing this online course. The formal 17th edition exam you are looking for is either:

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671: June 2008 (2011), or
  • City and Guilds 2382–12 Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2008 (2011) QCF

Not all colleges allow external candidates, so it may be necessary to find out where the closest centre accepting assessment-only bookings is from the EAL or City and Guilds websites.
