As we approach Christmas, it’s the time of year when many of us reflect, but also look forward.
Even without mention of the perennial ‘B’ word, 2018 has been a remarkable year in our industry. It began with January’s collapse of Carillion, which resulted in the strongest political and industry push ever to reform retentions, and help to protect the supply chain from upstream insolvency.
There was, of course, much more during the year - most notably the introduction of the 18th Edition, which comes into effect on 1 January 2019. Other new challenges included GDPR, which swung into effect this spring (we are advising Santa to be careful about making a list, even if he checks it twice…).
And what about 2019? Well, without getting into the business of predictions, but we do know the Government is looking to ‘Make Tax Digital’ in April and they will be ‘Reversing VAT’ in October. So if you have accrued any laurels this year, Christmas might be a great time to rest on them! We should also see the roll-out of a new construction occupational health assessment standard, with wide industry backing. More details in the Winter 2018 issue of ECAtoday, available now.
However, what will truly shape 2019 for most readers will be the overall business climate. Olympic great Steve Redgrave once said that “whatever the rowing conditions, they’re the ones we like” – and even as Brexit continues to play out, our industry has shown time and again that, whatever the business conditions next year, we will aim to make the very best of them.
And so, all of us at ECA would like to thank you for your support during the year and to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous 2019.
