BIM Manufacturers' Survey (2016)

The Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA), the Electrical Distributors Association (EDA), BEAMA, the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA), and Voltimum collaborated on a short survey for electrotechnical manufacturers on their use of BIM Objects.

The survey coincided with the government’s BIM Level 2 commitment coming into force in early 2016, which mandated its use in all Whitehall procurement, worth billions of pounds each year.

Survey Results

The results indicate there are discrepancies in the use of BIM object product information among different sectors; although there are legitimate reasons why some sectors will use them more than others.

As a result, the ECA will be collaborating with partners, including the EDA, to work with manufacturers to standardise and increase the amount of product information being produced in BIM format.

The Building Engineering BIM Readiness Survey (2015)

This 'BIM Readiness' survey was aimed at any and all companies that operate in the building services/engineering sectors.

The Government aimed to require the use of collaborative 3D BIM on its centrally procured projects by spring 2016 (also known as BIM Level 2), in order to unlock innovation and benefits throughout the building project life-cycle.

As a result, the ECA and our partners surveyed the entire building engineering services sector to establish its BIM readiness.

Survey results

Fewer than 1 in 6 firms (16%) in the building services sector are ‘fully ready’ to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) on projects, according to the survey findings.

With the government deadline for the mandatory use of ‘BIM Level 2’ in all Whitehall-procured contracts just months away, nearly 6 in 10 firms (57%) said they were not fully ready, while over 1 in 4 (27%) said they were ‘not ready at all’.

Over half of contractors (54%) with a turnover of less than £1 million are ‘not ready at all’ for Building Information Modelling (BIM), while 3 in 10 firms (30%) with earnings between £1 million and £20 million were in the same position.

Yet, despite the above findings, nearly two-thirds of respondents (65%) say that BIM Level 2 will be ‘good for the sector’, while almost 6 in 10 (57%) say it will be the ‘future for building services’.
