Update on increases in rates of statutory payments

This April there will be an increase in a number of statutory payments affecting employers, including changes to rates for the National Living Wage, and National Minimum Wage.

National Minimum Wage

The changes to the National Living and National Minimum wage rates are:


Current Hourly Rate

New Hourly Rates  effective from 1 April 2018

Workers aged 25 and over (the national living wage)



Workers aged 21 to 24 inclusive



Workers aged 18 to 20 inclusive



Workers aged under 18 who are no longer of compulsory school age



Apprentices aged under 19, or aged 19 and over but in the first year of his or her apprenticeship




Statutory Family Friendly Payments

Statutory Maternity, Adoption, Paternity and Shared Parental leave pay will increase from 140.98 to £145.18 per week with effect from 1 April 2018.

Statutory Sick Pay

Statutory sick pay will increase to £92.05 per week with effect from 6 April 2018.

Increases in a weeks’ pay and tribunal awards

The following increases in the statutory limits relating to employment to take effect from 6 April 2018:



Effective from 6 April 2017

Guaranteed payment for a day



Maximum amount of a week’s pay for calculating redundancy pay



Maximum compensation award for unfair dismissal



* or a year’s pay - whichever is lower
