Update to Site Operating Procedures

01 July 2020

The CLC Site Operating Procedures (SOP) have just been updated to reflect the latest Government guidance following the easing of lockdown measures in England from 4 July. The ‘one metre plus’ social distancing guidelines require workers to stay two metres apart “or one metre with risk mitigation where two metres is not viable”.

V5 SOP says “If you are not able to work whilst maintaining a two metre distance, or one metre with risk mitigation where two metres is not viable, consider whether the activity should continue and, if so, risk assess it (i.e. using mitigating measures shown in v5) and against any sector-specific guidance”. ECA is currently updating the ECA/BESA GN guides to reflect the government guidance.

  • Other changes to the version 5 of the SOP include:
  • Updates to the ‘When to Travel to Work’ section
  • Entry systems to be ‘cleaned regularly’, rather than between each use
  • Drivers to have access to welfare facilities
  • Canteens that have been closed or which offered a restricted service may re‐open
Paul Reeve, ECA director of CSR, said, "The practical implications of the latest SOP updates will come out in the wash. However, version 5 mainly reflects recent changes to government guidance to industry on social distancing, which includes 'maintain two meters, or one metre with risk mitigation where two metres in not viable'. Many construction businesses are already using mitigating measures when doing essential work within two metres, and so the changes underline the need for mitigation at closer proximity, based on risk assessment."
