Self-Employment Support Scheme on the way

06 May 2020

Eligible individuals will be able to apply for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) from 13 May.

HMRC will begin contacting eligible individuals (email, text and letter) to explain what they need to do to apply. Applications will open in tranches, using the self-employed Unique Tax Reference (UTR).

HMT has launched an online ‘eligibility checker’ at: www.tax.service.gov.uk/self-employment-support/enter-unique-taxpayer-reference. This will provide eligible self-employed individuals with a confirmed date from 13 May 2020 from which they will be able to apply for a grant.

HMT guidance on SEISS can be found at: SEISS can be accessed by the eligible self-employed (or a member of a partnership) who has lost income due to coronavirus. The guidance provides detail on how individuals or their business can be “adversely affected” by COVID-19, in order to claim the grant.

Those who are eligible can claim a taxable grant of 80% of their average trading profits, up to a maximum of £7,500 (three months’ profits), paid in a single instalment. Applicants must:
  • Have submitted an Income Tax Self-Assessment tax return for the tax year 2018-19
  • Traded in the tax year 2019-2020
  • Be trading on application – or would be, except for COVID19
  • Intend to continue to trade in the tax year 2020-2021
  • Have lost trading/partnership trading profits due to COVID-19
