Furlough set to be extended to December

02 November 2020

Among the policy changes announced by the Prime Minister on Saturday evening, one of the most impactful for businesses was the decision not to end the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (which was due to end that day) and extend eligibility for furlough and flexible furlough grants under the Scheme until December.

Although principally justified by reference to the national lockdown being ordered in England, extension of the furlough Scheme also applies to Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

ECA guidance
Whilst some of the details are still sketchy, and Parliament needs to vote this week on the measures that have been announced, ECA has produced some initial Member-only guidance, outlining what we know so far.

This guidance includes updated sample furlough and flexible furlough letters for Members to adapt and use to suit their own circumstances.

Note: the previously announced Job Support Scheme will not be introduced until after Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme ends.

We will keep Members informed of any material changes and additional information on business support etc. in the days ahead.

The Prime Minister specifically said on Saturday that those working in construction should continue to do so, if they cannot work from home and are symptomless (and applying COVID secure working practices which are shown at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19 and if construction work is onsite, working to construction CLC Site Operating Procedures v6).
