CLC publishes one-stop asbestos guide

Exposure to asbestos kills around 1000 tradespeople a year in the UK and asbestos remains a major hazard in many domestic and other buildings. Asbestos is still out there in many buildings, built before 2000, and tradespeople are still exposed to it. The Construction leadership Council, of which ECA is a key member, has published a raft of guidance to help businesses manage the risks of asbestos exposure during retrofitting and other installation and repair activity .

The interactive, user-friendly Asbestos Risk guide is aimed at small construction firms and tradespeople who may disturb building fabric. The Asbestos Risk guide shows employers and employees where asbestos is commonly found in domestic and commercial buildings. It also contains links to an ‘Am I at risk?’ help page, HSE guidance and reminders about the correct use of PPE. It also signposts to a ‘Duty to Manage Asbestos’ flowchart.

Electrical and other building services contractors are potentially at risk from encountering asbestos, notably when carrying out refurbishment or maintenance. ECA produces a range of Health and Safety guidance for Members including Toolbox Talks on preventing asbestos exposure. Click here for more.
