Tougher laws on building fire safety

The Fire Safety Bill, which aims to bring in tougher safety rules after the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, has become law. It includes a requirement for building owners to manage and reduce the risk of fire in their buildings.

Under the current rules, leaseholders must pay for safety improvements, including fire breaks, new balconies, safer doors and sprinkler systems.

The debate over who should pay for safety upgrades became a political sticking point. The government faced several defeats as The House of Lords fought to prevent residents footing the bill.

Earlier this year the government announced £3.5bn for leaseholders in England to remove cladding from high rise blocks. The measure was widely seen as inadequate, leaving residents to cover the costs of the many safety measures needed.
