Sections of Cover

The following is a high-level view of the covers provided under the terms of this policy. Some sections of cover are optional. The full terms, conditions and levels of indemnity are outlined in the policy wording.

If you employ anyone at all, including apprentices, labour-only subcontractors or casual workers, UK law requires you to hold Employers’ Liability Insurance with a minimum level of cover of £5 million. The Tysers’ scheme offers financial protection up to £10 million with higher limits available.

For electrical contractors, this cover protects your business in the event that an employee suffers an injury or develops an illness as a result of their work.

What does Employers’ Liability Insurance cover?

Employers’ Liability Insurance protects you against the financial consequences of employee claims, including liability for damages and associated legal costs arising from injury or illness sustained in the course of employment.

In addition, the policy can provide compensation for:

  • Court attendance costs incurred by directors, partners or employees, up to the limits stated within the policy
  • Legal costs and expenses arising from criminal proceedings for breaches of regulations, as defined in the policy wording
  • Unsatisfied Court Judgements, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy
  • Indemnity to Principals, where required under contract, within the limits set out in the policy

Key value points for ECA Members:

  • Immediate financial protection for serious injury or death: Provides lump sum payments that can help support families, cover financial commitments, or stabilise a business in the event of a life-changing incident.
  • Income continuity following accidents: Temporary disability benefits can help offset loss of earnings while a contractor or employee is unable to work—critical in a sector where time off directly impacts income.
  • Support for long-term disability risks: Permanent disability payments help mitigate the financial consequences of injuries that could prevent a return to trade or reduce earning capacity.
