Net Zero Business Champion: EFT Consult

Wales-based building engineering services firm EFT Consult, part of RDM Group, have been working on an ambitious net-zero affordable housing project in Swansea.

Their challenge was to deliver homes with the most advanced and sustainable technologies currently available, while ensuring they remained affordable and provided value for money for homeowners.

Chris Jenkins, Director at EFT Consult, said, “All properties were engineered with not just energy and sustainability in mind, but also well-being and future proofing with smart technologies.” EFT worked closely with architects to ensure that the houses attained a minimum SAP ‘A’ rating – a calculation used to assess the energy and environmental performance of new homes.

To achieve this, EFT incorporated the following technologies in every home they helped build:

  • U-values that exceed Welsh building control values by almost 20%.
  • An air tightness target of 5.
  • Solar PV sized systems between 4-6kWh (depending on size of property).
  • Battery storage – 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall.
  • 7.2kW Electric Vehicle chargers
  • Fibre optic cabling
  • CAT6 data cabling throughout
  • Direct electric heating with smart controls
  • Air source heat pump hot water cylinders
  • Infrastructure for prospective buyers to install smart doorbell systems
