Net Zero Business Champion: Imtech

Imtech helped design and build GlaxoSmithKline’s Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry, at the University of Nottingham. It is the first lab of its kind in the UK.

Imtech made extensive use of modular construction methods, industry-leading laboratory design techniques, and heat capture technology to re-use excess heat from parts of the lab.

The building is entirely powered by renewable energy, with a solar PV roof and a combined heat-and-power unit fired by biomass. The lab takes no energy from the grid. In fact, excess renewable energy is fed back into the grid.

For all their new projects, Imtech intends to create a Net Zero Carbon Roadmap. They also advise their customers on how to further reduce carbon and provide clear route to Net Zero, even after projects have been completed.

Imtech looks at whole-life carbon, embodied carbon within products, carbon from energy in use, life cycle replacement, maintenance and end of life recycling.
