ECA calls for Government transparency on inheritance tax reform

ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association), is one of 12 signatories in a letter to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves MP, urging the Government to publish its analysis that has led to the reform of the Business Property Relief (BPR), and Agricultural Property Relief (APR), in the public interest.

The letter states that a recent Family Business UK study found the reforms could threaten more than 200,000 jobs, reduce tax revenue by £1.9 billion, and cut almost £15 billion in economic activity by the end of this Parliament.

Many industry bodies proposed a ‘clawback’ option that would tax assets at the full 40% inheritance tax if sold by a family successor within seven years of the owner’s death. This proposal was denied on the grounds of it not raising as much money as the current proposals.

The reform to BPR and APR will take effect in April 2026
