ECA welcomes Government’s commitment to cheaper electricity, but warns safety remains key

ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association) warmly welcomes Ed Miliband’s comments at the National Growth Debate conference today.  He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to clean electrification and energy security for the UK. ECA Member businesses will play a critical role in delivering both.

For the last five years ECA has been calling for a rebalancing of energy taxation to bring parity between gas and electricity prices and reduce costs for all. A reduction in the price of electricity is a crucial step to encourage widespread adoption of electrical heat and transport.

The trade association, which has been instrumental in setting standards for safe electrical installations for 125 years, cautions that accelerated  delivery of low carbon technologies must not compromise safety standards.

The acceleration of roof top Solar PV, EV Charging infrastructure and measures to support domestic heating are to be applauded.  However, to maximise electrical efficiency and thereby reduce domestic bills, low carbon technologies must be integrated effectively with existing systems by responsible businesses employing competent individuals.

Andrew Eldred, Managing Director at ECA, said:

“ECA Members will be pleased to hear Ed Miliband reaffirm his commitment to the electrification of the UK, and stepping up the pace of change to mitigate against today’s volatile economic climate.

"As electrification picks up pace, we urge Government not to look for risky short-cuts to delivery. Electricity is a safety-critical energy source and installation and design must be carried out by competent, trained professionals. Electrical safety needs to remain at the forefront of everyone’s mind."

To continue to enjoy the safe and reliable electricity we all expect, any electrical installations must be undertaken by a competent, qualified electrician.
