ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association) Members are being asked to have your say on a consultation gathering views on changing the lower limit of the voltage standards across distribution networks.
The consultation from the Energy Networks Association (ENA) is looking to change the lower limit to our statutory voltage from 216 V AC to 207 V AC.
The consultation states that connection of multiple low carbon technologies (LCT), such as domestic solar generation and electric vehicle chargers, to the grid from a single location can lead to over-voltage, which can cause household and commercial equipment to shut down when protective limits are reached.
This proposed change to the lower limit would give networks a greater scope to operate in, ensuring customers can continue to access clean, affordable and resilient energy while adapting their homes to make more use of LCTs.
The proposed change will not lead to an interrupted power supply for consumers, and networks will continue to monitor voltage levels so that appliances keep running smoothly.
The ECA would like to hear from Members if and how the lower limit of the voltage range could impact electrical installations for their clients, particularly in relation to safe and continued operation of equipment, industrial processes, circuit protection and fault clearance times.
The deadline for submissions to the ENA consultation is 22 February 2026.
You can also email ECA’s Technical team with your thoughts for potential inclusion to ECA’s response to the consultation, by emailing technical@eca.co.uk no later than 5pm on Friday 13 February 2026.
