Remembering Simon Bartley OBE

Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) is sad to hear about the death of Simon Bartley OBE, a much loved colleague and friend, who passed away on 21 May at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with illness. His wife, Christine, reports that he died peacefully, as he had lived – calm, generous and engaged to the end.

Simon came from a family electrical business, C J Bartley & Co., with long-standing membership of ECA, a connection he valued throughout his life. He was an active member of ECA’s Greater London Region for many years and served on a range of regional and national committees. He played a leading role in ECA’s centenary in 2001, reflecting both his commitment to the sector and his skill in bringing people together.

He went on to make a major contribution to skills and training, both in the UK and internationally. He is best known for his work with WorldSkills – where he served as President from 2011 to 2015.

Simon championed vocational excellence and helped raise the profile of technical careers worldwide. He remained closely involved with industry training and education bodies, focused on improving opportunities for the next generation.

Simon also gave distinguished service to the City of London livery movement. He joined the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers in 1996 and served as Master in 2006/7. He was also Master of the Feltmakers (2013/14), Consort to the Master Spectacle Maker, a Liveryman of the Spectacle Makers, and a member of the Educators’ Company.

He will be remembered for his energy, warmth and commitment to others. He is survived by his wife Christine and his family, to whom we extend our deepest condolences.
