Greater Manchester Existing Workers

The opportunity...

Hundreds of individuals already working in the electrical industry in Greater Manchester have the potential to upgrade their status to become fully qualified electricians, using one of the upskilling routes recognised by industry:

  • Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)
  • Adult NVQ
  • Adult Apprenticeship

Recognising this opportunity, local employers and industry organisations have now joined forces with education providers, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and other regional bodies, to help more individuals and/or businesses access the benefits - including:

  • For individuals: ECS gold card status, better pay and career progression prospects.
  • For businesses: compliance with increasing industry competence requirements, and a better qualified, more productive and flexible workforce.
  • For society and the wider electrical industry: an upskilled UK industry, better equipped to deliver the opportunities of clean energy and electrification.

Don’t just take our word for it!

More than 1000 individuals annually complete successfully one of the two main electrical upskilling routes (EWA and adult NVQ). These include dozens each year from Greater Manchester. Bobby Hamilton from NorthTech Manchester shares his experience of taking part in the Experienced Worker Assessment, and how it has benefited both his company and his employees.

Now is your chance to do the same, and reap the benefits!

Next steps and financial assistance...

To find out whether you’re eligible for either the Experienced Worker Assessment or adult NVQ, visit the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) website.

For further information and contact details for local training providers offering one or more upskilling route in or around the Greater Manchester area, go to:

If the business you work for is a member of the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry, financial assistance with EWA or NVQ costs is available from the JIB’s Skills Development Fund

Alternatively, some Greater Manchester based training providers are able to draw down local EWA and/or NVQ funding provided by the GMCA. Ask your provider (above) for further details.

You may be able to fund this via advanced learner loan, subject to eligibility and availability.

More about the Greater Manchester ETCA

The Existing Workers Campaign is the first initiative undertaken by the Greater Manchester Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance (ETCA): an ECA-led coalition established in late 2024, and consisting of local ECA Member businesses, industry organisations, education providers and regional bodies, including the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

All ETCA participants are volunteers, and the ETCA currently receives no direct financial support from either Government or any other external organisation. 100% of the costs involved in making videos to support the GM Existing Worker Campaign have been met through the generosity of ECA’s North West Region.
