Q&A With South Wales eRAMS SuperUser Ian Butherway!

eRAMS is a completely free, software tool designed to help Members create and store contract-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). It simplifies the process while delivering the flexibility needed to create suitable and sufficient assessments for both in-company and supply chain use.

We sat down with Ian Butherway from Electro-Technical & Testing Solutions Ltd, known as ETTS, our first South Wales eRAMS SuperUser, to find out how the tool supports his work and what advice he has for other Members. As a SuperUser, he has agreed to help ECA support South Wales Members with any queries or questions they may have about eRAMS!

1. How did you become an eRAMS SuperUser?

I became an eRAMS user as soon as it was available on the ECA website. I use it a lot, and when that became known to Wendy (ECA South Wales Regional Manager), the next thing I knew, I was a SuperUser!

2. What has been the benefit of using eRAMS?

The biggest benefits are both cost and convenience. If we used a third-party service like many contractors do, not only would it be more expensive, but we wouldn’t have the same flexibility - especially when you need to produce RAMS quickly for an urgent repair job.

3. What have been the challenges?

When I first started using eRAMS, like with any new system, there was a bit of a learning curve. At first, we didn’t use it very often, so there were gaps in usage and I had to remember how to do things. But once you're into it, it becomes quite easy.

4. Has eRAMS helped you with risk assessments?

Enormously!

5. What can be improved on eRAMS?

I think the development so far has been pretty good, so I just hope that it continues to evolve and improve over time.

6. What would you say to encourage other ECA Members to use the software?

Try it - but please persevere. It’s worth it.

7. Are there any other ECA services that you would recommend?

Yes, I would recommend a number of them, but in particular:
